Ogden food bank needs gardeners extra fruit and produce - Salt Lake Tribune Posted: 28 Aug 2009 07:01 AM PDT Instead of leaving all those zucchinis on the doorstep of an unsuspecting neighbor, how about helping someone who rarely has fresh produce on the dinner table. Bank of Utah is asking local gardeners to drop off their extra fruits and vegetables in boxes provided at two bank branches in Ogden on Sunday nights or early Monday mornings before 9. Volunteers from Catholic Community Services, in turn, will pick up the donations Monday morning and take them to the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank in Ogden. The donations will be distributed to senior citizens and the 400 families who come to the food bank through the rest of the week. "We know there are lots of fresh vegetables out there that homeowners have grown," said Scott H. Parkinson, Bank of Utah's senior vice president and a volunteer. "We want to make it easier for them to contribute." This summer, volunteers from Bank of Utah, Boys and Girls Clubs and the Mount Benedict Monastery have been tending three vegetable gardens in Ogden. They now are harvesting squash, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables -- but more produce is needed to meet the needs of northern Utah families and seniors. Senior citizens are most likely to have diets lacking in fresh fruits and vegetables because they are less mobile or they live on a fixed income, supporters say. "Fresh produce is a rare commodity at the food bank," said Marcie Valdez, director of Northern Utah Catholic Community Services. "We have a lot of canned and dry food, but we see very little fresh fruits and vegetables."The "Sow for Humanity" garden at the monastery uses Mel Bartholomew's innovative square-foot gardening technique, which requires less water and uses no fertilizers or pesticides. Yields from produce raised in 4-foot, partitioned, rectangular wood boxes, is greater than with traditional row gardens. Sister Danile Knight, prioress of Mount Benedict Monastery, donated the monastery's land and water for the garden -- and blessed the plot. Bank of Utah was a sponsor with financial support for materials as well as volunteers. Wheelwright Lumber donated the lumber and local nurseries provided the plants. In addition, Black Island farms in Syracuse donated produce and gardener Alan Kap of West Haven brought in three truckloads of watermelons. Bank of Utah branches in Ogden with drop-off boxes for fruit and veggies are at 2605 Washington Blvd. and 3990 Washington Blvd. Drop boxes also are provided at Mount Benedict Monastery, 6000 S. 1075 East, for the needy regardless of religious affiliation. Virtual bank in EVE freezes accounts due to deficit - Ars Technica Posted: 28 Aug 2009 08:27 AM PDT EVE Online's largest player-controlled virtual bank, Ebank, just can't seem to catch a break these days. A few months after it was revealed that the company had been defrauded of a staggering amount of cash, it turns out that the institution's digital vaults are far more barren than many realized, leading to an in-game freezing of accounts for any individual or organization that happened to have invested any InterStellar Kredits (ISK) with the bank. Early this summer, it came to light that a veteran EVE player (known only as "Ricdic") had embezzled —and then sold in the real world— over 200 billion ISK from Ebank, causing a run on the virtual financial institution. However, this was just the beginning of the problems for the player-owned bank. Recently installed Ebank Chairman Ray McCormack admitted that the bank had been mismanaged, and rules, safeguards, and controls were not enforced. As a result, it's been revealed that Ebank is 380 billion ISK poorer thanks to a number of defaulted loans. Because of the aforementioned mismanagement, it apparently took the bank's new officers a while to figure out just how far in the red their institution is. At the moment, customer accounts will remain frozen until the bank manages to stabilize. According to McCormack, "withdrawals will be allowed once the bank achieves a maintainable equity status of 90% (1.8t currently); they will be stopped again should that fall below 80%." The main problem with Ebank's account freezing is that it could do some serious harm to the game's economy, mainly because players won't be able to withdraw their funds in order to pay for in-game goods and services. Exactly how long a recovery will take is currently anyone's guess, though, as it turns out that the board of directors revealed that the bank is currently facing a deficit of roughly 1.2 trillion ISK, with the amount increasing by approximately 12 billion ISK a month.
