Lloyds sells Halifax Estate Agencies for £1 - Manchester Evening News Posted: 16 Oct 2009 04:58 AM PDT LLOYDS Banking Group today said up to 460 full and part-time jobs would go after it agreed to sell its Halifax Estate Agencies division for £1. The sale of the loss-making business to Your Move owner LSL Property Services will see the closure of 121 banking counters within the agency's offices early next year. Lloyds said the agency, which has 218 offices, was no longer part of its plans although it added compulsory redundancies among counter staff would be a "last resort". The group, which is 43 per cent owned by the taxpayer, said the vast majority of the counters which are closing were within a mile of a Lloyds TSB or HBOS branch. Around 1,050 HEA staff will transfer over to LSL, which will rebrand the offices as Your Move, Reeds Rain or Intercounty. The deal makes LSL the second largest estate agency network in the UK. The U.K. FTSE 100 index /quotes/comstock/23i!i:ukx (UK:UKX 5,190, -32.71, -0.63%) declined 0.6%, or 32.71 points, to close at 5,190.24. Other European shares and U.S. stocks were also weak as investors weighed mixed results from General Electric and a loss from Bank of America. See Europe Markets. Banks were mostly lower in London, with HSBC Holdings /quotes/comstock/23s!a:hsba (UK:HSBA 694.00, -13.90, -1.96%) /quotes/comstock/13*!hbc/quotes/nls/hbc (HBC 57.04, -1.08, -1.86%) and Barclays /quotes/comstock/23s!a:barc (UK:BARC 372.25, -7.65, -2.01%) /quotes/comstock/13*!bcs/quotes/nls/bcs (BCS 24.37, -0.78, -3.10%) each falling 2%. Lloyds Banking Group /quotes/comstock/23s!a:lloy (UK:LLOY 93.10, +1.69, +1.85%) /quotes/comstock/13i!lyg/quotes/nls/lyg (LYG 6.15, +0.01, +0.16%) , however, managed to gain ground, rising 1.9%. Deutsche Bank upgraded the firm to buy from hold, saying it believes there is potential upside for the stock irrespective of whether the bank enters the government's asset protection scheme or goes down the route of raising cash from shareholders. Also, the bank said that it has agreed in principle to sell its Halifax Estate Agencies business to LSL Property Services for a pound. In total 1,050 jobs will transfer to LSL and 460 bank staff will be affected by the counter closures, with 360 full time roles likely to be lost. "The decision to sell the estate agency business, which has been loss making for some time, follows a strategic review undertaken by the group which concluded that an estate agency operation is no longer integral to its business model," Lloyds said. LSL /quotes/comstock/23s!e:lsl (UK:LSL 285.00, +23.00, +8.78%) , which had earlier announced it was in talks to strike such a deal, rose 5.7%. Meanwhile, most top-index oil and gas sector companies gained ground on Friday with Royal Dutch Shell /quotes/comstock/23s!e:rdsa (UK:RDSA 1,859, +20.00, +1.09%) /quotes/comstock/13*!rds.a/quotes/nls/rds.a (RDS.A 61.07, +0.59, +0.98%) , up 1.1%, BP /quotes/comstock/23s!a:bp. (UK:BP. 559.10, +3.50, +0.63%) /quotes/comstock/13*!bp/quotes/nls/bp (BP 55.14, +0.38, +0.69%) , up 0.6%, Tullow Oil /quotes/comstock/23s!e:tlw (UK:TLW 1,236, +22.00, +1.81%) , up 1.8% and Cairn Energy /quotes/comstock/23s!e:cne (UK:CNE 3,016, +40.00, +1.34%) up 1.3%. The gains came as crude-oil futures traded over $77 a barrel on Friday as traders bet on rising demand and worried about falling U.S. gasoline inventories. Oil futures slipped later in the session. See full story. Outside the top index, shares of National Express /quotes/comstock/23s!a:nex (UK:NEX 362.00, -109.00, -23.14%) dropped 23.1% after a consortium led by CVC Capital Partners scrapped a 765 million pound ($1.25 billion) bid for the bus and rail operator. See full story. National Express rival, Stagecoach Group /quotes/comstock/23s!e:sgc (UK:SGC 156.90, -7.40, -4.50%) , declined 4.5% after it said that it is no longer in talks with CVC and the Cosmen family over acquiring National Express's U.K. bus and rail operations. Shares of card retailer Clinton Cards /quotes/comstock/23s!e:cc. (UK:CC. 42.25, +7.25, +20.71%) jumped 20.7%. Pretax profit from continuing operations rose to 24.1 million pounds, from 22 million pounds last year, the firm said. Sarah Turner is a markets reporter for MarketWatch in London. UK government won't underwite Lloyds rights - FT - Forbes Posted: 14 Oct 2009 06:51 PM PDT LONDON, Oct 15 (Reuters) - The British government will not underwrite a planned rights issue by Lloyds Banking Group,, the Financial Times said on Thursday. The newspaper quoted people involved in the process as saying that the government would definitely not make a commitment to mop up any unbought shares. The FT said a refusal to underwrite any cash call would hamper attempts by the partly state-owed bank to raise enough money to free itself from a government toxic asset insurance programme. Officials at Lloyds were unavailable for immediate comment. Analysts and bankers have said Lloyds may struggle to raise even a few billion pounds from an expected debt swap, leaving a rights issue and asset sales as key to any exit from a government insurance plan. Lloyds, 43 percent owned by the UK taxpayer, said last month it was considering an exit from the government's costly scheme to insure against losses from bad debts. It may need to raise as much as 25 billion pounds ($40 billion) to satisfy UK regulators, industry sources say. In a separate story, the Guardian newspaper said UK Finance Minister Alistair Darling was ready to hand over as much as 5 billion pounds ($7.99 billion) of taxpayers' money to Lloyds in order to shore up its finances. The Guardian said negotiations between the bank and the government were continuing. Iran Shipping Company rejects UK claims on transfer of nuclear goods - Payvand Iran News Posted: 16 Oct 2009 08:33 AM PDT TEHRAN (ISNA)- Iran's Shipping Company rejected the UK claims that vessels of the Iranian organization have transferred illegal materials including nuclear goods.
www.irisl.net "The Iranian company's activities are completely within the international rules and regulations and it has never violated the international rules of shipping industry," the Iranian organization said. The Iranian company also stressed, all of its vessels are only used for trade and described British officials' claim on Iranian shipping industry's activity over transfer of nuclear and missile equipment to Iran as "sheer lie". It also continued, the UK restriction against Iran's Shipping Company will not impose a sever influence on the traffic of Iranian vessels in international ports and waters and added, the level of cooperation between the Iranian organization and British sides have been very insignificant over last years. The UK ordered financial-services companies to end trade with Iran's Bank Mellat and Shipping Lines Company and claimed that these organizations are linked to the county's nuclear issue. ...
