Top Online Banking Threats to Financial Service ... - Bank Info Security Posted: 13 Mar 2010 01:46 AM PST Securing a financial services network environment can be a daunting challenge. At issue is not only meeting the basic business requirement of ensuring that a customer's financial information remains private and secure, but to do so in accordance with the variety of regulations that have been implemented by state and federal governments, and the credit card industry as well. Security breaches can have a far-reaching impact to not only a company's finances, but to their reputation as well. Companies are required to prove their compliance with these regulations and will be held liable for their failure to do so. Offering a wider range of online services alone will not be sufficient to reduce customer churn; it must be accompanied by enhanced security features that provide the customer with confidence and, in turn, results in winning their long-term trust and loyalty.
It is, therefore, essential that financial services providers take a proactive approach to identifying potential cyber attack threats and the areas of vulnerability within their own infrastructure. To aid in this process, this paper will provide insight into the top five threats to the financial services industry and SafeNet's recommended solutions for a defense that not only provides a secure transaction environment for customers but also satisfies stringent government and industry compliance regulations. S'pore bank sees mobile users doubling - Zd Net Asia.com Posted: 11 Mar 2010 11:38 PM PST update SINGAPORE--The Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Bank (OCBC) says its mobile banking user base has doubled every year since it launched the service in 2006. Patrick Chew, head of delivery for consumer financial services at OCBC, said in a press briefing here Friday that mobile banking is moving from its early-adopter base to the mainstream audience. Transaction volumes have also doubled each year, reflecting increased trust in the security of mobile banking services, said Chew. He could not specify how many customers were using OCBC's mobile services, but noted that the figure has reached 30 percent of its Internet banking customer base. The rate of adoption for mobile banking is taking a faster upswing, compared to that of automated teller machines (ATMs) in the 1980s, and Internet banking in the 1990s, he noted. Chew also said the majority of the bank's mobile users are between the ages of 25 and 45, with 70 percent of them transacting on their phones at least once every two weeks, or more frequently. While early users turned to mobile banking primarily to perform passive tasks such as checking their bank balances, more users now perform transactions over their phones, including making bills payments, he said. He added that the volume of bill payments has quadrupled each month over the past year. "More users are managing their cash through their phones, beyond just monitoring bank balances," he said. In an e-mailed response to ZDNet Asia, Sandeep Lal, managing director and head of consumer e-business at local bank, DBS Bank, said: "We are in an advanced stage of implementing our mBanking [mobile banking] service in Singapore and we intend to lead in the space, too." Lal added that DBS has an Internet banking customer base covering 1.35 million users. Citibank launched its mobile service, called Citi Mobile, in Hong Kong toward the end of 2008. It extended this service to Singapore in August last year. The iPhone touch He noted a 10 to 20 percent rise in usage among OCBC customers after SingTel brought the device to Singapore, followed by a similar spike when competing telcos, StarHub and MobileOne, also began offering the iPhone. While OCBC has made mobile banking available via a Java applet since 2006, the arrival of more smartphones and generous data bundles have helped push mobile banking up, he said. He added that early banking through mobile phones involved a slower process because of lower data speeds, and faced barriers such as expensive cellular data costs and the need for users to manually configure some phone models to get online. Today, most phones are configured to get online out of the box, said Chew. In addition, OCBC is eyeing the slate space to continue the ramp up of mobile banking services, he said. Chew's team has plans to import a few sets of the Apple iPad once the product debuts next month, so the bank can perform tests on the device. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Benguet farmers’ stock-in-trade gets upgrade - Global Nation Posted: 13 Mar 2010 08:26 AM PST BAGUIO CITY – Bernard Ugalde, a professor and head of the computer science department of the University of Baguio (UB), plays Farmville, an online game shared by members of social networking site, Facebook. Much like SimCity, the game allows players to build a thriving economy out of their simulated farms. But what struck Ugalde most about the game were the smiling avatars, which grow the imaginary vegetables and fruits. "Playing Farmville involves the basics of planting and harvesting," he says, "but the game shows how the farmers benefit from their products." Ugalde says it's the farmer (avatar) who manages his resources and benefits from the crops. The game led a team of UB teachers and students to develop a website that would soon allow farmers of La Trinidad, Benguet, to trade vegetables online. The website, mAgri-Kalakal, takes advantage of the fact that farmers today have access to mobile phones, Ugalde says during the 3rd Information and Communication Technology Research Congress at the Saint Louis University here on Wednesday. Farmers may use the short messaging system (SMS) feature on their cellular phones to send text messages to the website detailing the prices of goods, which they harvested fresh from the fields. The website then allows traders to bid for these vegetables, enabling them to complete the transaction without the intervention of middlemen, Ugalde says. "As the website shows the [real] price of the goods [at a given moment], buyers could bid and then pay the farmers using Smart Money [a mobile banking service offered by Smart Telecommunications] … without the intervention of middlemen," he says. The website was designed by Julius Baniaga, a UB graduating computer science student, based on his undergraduate thesis in August 2009. Ugalde says he and the others have presented the web design to the La Trinidad government and the Department of Trade and Industry last year, and received their endorsement. But the undertaking is a private enterprise, he says. "Mobile computing seems very promising, so we thought of coming up with a solution that could benefit the farmers," he says. Ugalde says the system works well for La Trinidad cooperatives, and the online trading mechanism was designed to suit the farming and harvesting cycle of the farmers there. La Trinidad supplies most of Metro Manila's vegetable supply. Dominador Dongla Jr, president of FARMERS.NET, a local farm marketing consultancy group, says the online trading project fulfills an idea that the Department of Agriculture tried to accomplish in the 1990s. Dongla used to work for the La Trinidad trading post, where traders haggle for vegetables each morning before taking supplies to Metro Manila. "The DA marketing experts thought of using the Internet, but only to provide data about prices. No one thought of trading online until now," he says. The system will change the way vegetables are shipped to Metro Manila because it now makes the farmers responsible for shipping down their produce, he says. "But it's an idea Benguet farmers would embrace," he says. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
